A = ½bh

Use the perpendicular height, not a slanted side.

Parallelogram

Trapezoid

Add the parallel bases, multiply by height, then take one-half.

Rectangular prism volume

V = lwh

Volume uses cubic units.

Rectangular prism surface area

SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh

Surface area uses square units.

Coordinate distance

|x₂ − x₁| or |y₂ − y₁|

This shortcut applies when a side is horizontal or vertical.

Use the correct unit

Find the area of a triangle with base 12 cm and perpendicular height 7 cm.

2. Parallelogram area

Find the area of a parallelogram with base 9 m and height 4.5 m.

  1. Use A = bh.
  2. A = 9 × 4.5.

3. Trapezoid area

A trapezoid has parallel bases 8 in and 14 in and height 5 in.

  1. Use A = ½(b₁ + b₂)h.
  2. A = ½(8 + 14) × 5.
  3. A = ½ × 22 × 5 = 55.

4. Irregular polygon

An L-shaped floor is split into rectangles measuring 8 by 3 and 5 by 4.

  1. Find each rectangle's area.
  2. 8 × 3 = 24 and 5 × 4 = 20.
  3. Add 24 + 20.

5. Coordinate-plane rectangle

A rectangle has vertices (−3, 2), (4, 2), (4, 7), and (−3, 7).

  1. Horizontal length: |4 − (−3)| = 7.
  2. Vertical length: |7 − 2| = 5.
  3. Area = 7 × 5.

Common Grade 6 geometry mistakes

Using a slanted side as height

The height must be perpendicular to the selected base.

Forgetting the one-half

Triangle and trapezoid formulas include a factor of one-half.

Adding instead of multiplying

Area and volume formulas multiply dimensions; perimeter adds side lengths.

Mixing square and cubic units

Area and surface area are square units; volume is cubic units.

Missing a face in a net

List all six faces and pair congruent rectangles.

Subtracting coordinates incorrectly

Use absolute difference so a length is positive.
