Expressions and equations are not the same

Students make fewer algebra errors when they can clearly distinguish between the two.

Expression

An expression represents a quantity. It may contain numbers, variables, and operations, but it does not include an equals sign.

  • Examples: 4x + 7
  • 18 ÷ 3 + 2
  • 5(a − 1)

Equation

An equation says that two expressions are equal. It includes an equals sign and can often be solved to find an unknown value.

  • Examples: x + 5 = 14
  • 3n = 21
  • y/4 > 6 is an inequality

1. Write an expression from words

Write an expression for “7 more than 3 times a number n.”

  1. 3n means 3 times n.
  2. 7 more than that gives 3n + 7.
Answer: 3n + 7

2. Evaluate an expression

Evaluate 5x − 2 when x = 4.

  1. Substitute 4 for x: 5(4) − 2.
  2. Compute: 20 − 2 = 18.
Answer: 18

3. Use the distributive property

Rewrite 4(y + 6) as an equivalent expression.

  1. Multiply 4 by each term inside the parentheses.
  2. 4(y + 6) = 4y + 24.
Answer: 4y + 24

4. Factor a common factor

Rewrite 18a + 30 as a product.

  1. The greatest common factor of 18 and 30 is 6.

5. Solve an equation

  1. Undo +9 by subtracting 9 from both sides.

6. Solve an inequality

  1. Multiply both sides by 3.

Common errors

Six mistakes to watch for

Students improve faster when the error pattern is named and corrected directly.

  1. Writing 7 + 3n as 7n or 10n when the phrase is “7 more than 3 times n.”
  2. Substituting a value incorrectly, such as replacing x in only one place but not another.
  3. Forgetting to distribute to every term inside parentheses.
  4. Combining unlike terms such as 3x + 4 becoming 7x.
  5. Solving only one side of an equation without maintaining equality.
  6. Treating inequalities exactly like equations without thinking about the meaning of the solution set.
